Things To Do In Your Garden In March   by Graeme Knights

March is a very important month in the life of any gardener. As spring is arriving, March ensures that there is plenty to do.

Preparation

This is the right time to prepare any unfinished work on the lawn, prepare the necessary water features, order seeds, turn and fork compost and trim the cuttings. Besides that, it is also the time to sow the vegetables and prepare the garden in anticipation of the busy months ahead.

Later in the month, when the sun starts to get stronger is the time to mow the lawn (as well as trim the edges) to ensure that it starts of the season neat and tidy. This will also reveal any bare patches or dead patches, which allows you to then sow new grass to ensure you have a lush even lawn.

In order to ensure that there is a steady supply of water, all water features should be cleaned up and checked for any damage they may have endured over winter. Besides that, all fountains and pumps that were disconnected in winter should be fixed to ensure that they are up and running.

Pruning

It is advisable to prune peer and apple trees in the early days of March while they are still dormant. Other plants that can be pruned at this early stage include prune currants, gooseberries and shrub roses among others. On the other hand, fruit trees that are bare-rooted and bushes should be planted along with thins such as raspberries which are cane plants should be planted as well.

Vegetables

March is the ideal month to plant plenty of vegetables; such vegetables include beetroot, early turnips, radishes, lettuce, leek, early peas, broad beans and spinach beet among others.

Other vegetable such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers should be sown in a greenhouse or a propagator in March. Strawberry seeds, summer bedding plants and tuber and coleus can also be sown inside the greenhouse to ensure that there will be plenty of supply in the coming months.

Tidy & Protect

In order to keep harmful pests and other insects at bay, it is advisable to spray all the fruit trees and other bushes with fungicides. Besides that, it is also the time to clear any grass from the base. Compost can also be spread along the drip at this time of the year.

Inside the flower garden, it is advisable to cut any blooming bulbs. Bushes like azaleas should be fed and rose flowers fertilized. Cutting taken from plants like lily can be planted for display purposes when summer finally arrives. In order to give your garden a taste of color and fragrance later in the year, it is advisable to sow sweet peas at a place where they will be able to climb other plants.

So there is a lot to do in the garden in March. From preparing for the upcoming months to getting this started. Make sure you have your seedsand equipment ready and get gardening!
